A Nightmare on Elm Street opens in limited release across the U.S. in 1984. The classic slasher film stars Robert Englund, Heather Lagenkamp and Johnny Depp in his film debut and is filmed over just 32 days. Some of the scenes of violence have to be trimmed in order for the film to earn an R rating. However, its success spurs at least six sequels, Bollywood and Indonesian versions and a remake.
