Johann Heinrich Füssli is born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1741. The Romantic painter, draughtsman and writer’s work is known mostly for its often supernatural subject matter. His work included more than 200 paintings, most notably “The Nightmare,” a widely influential and much copied image. He died in 1825.
