Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde premieres in New York City in 1920. The first notable adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel stars early Hollywood idol John Barrymore and features story elements of The Picture of Dorian Gray, pioneering make-up effects and a memorable performance by Barrymore. Though it receives mixed reaction from critics and audiences on its opening, it has since become a classic.
