The United States Congress passes the National Film Preservation Act of 1988. The legislation not only establishes the National Film Registry and the National Film Preservation Board that has saved dozens of features, shorts, documentaries and archival films, but the act virtually ends the colorizing of black and white films. The registry includes many classics and Oscar-winning films, including Alien, The Birds, Frankenstein, Dracula, The Exorcist, Halloween, Jaws and The Silence of the Lambs.
