This Day in Halloween: The Russian ship the Dmitry runs aground off Whitby, England in 1885, partly inspiring Bram Stoker for "Dracula." / Illustration by Brooke Ramirez

The Russian cargo vessel the Dmitry runs aground off the coast of Whitby, England in 1885 during “a storm of great violence” and is torn apart. All seven crew members survive, and the wreck serves as inspiration to Bram Stoker for the Demeter in his novel Dracula and eventually for the film The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
