John L. Balderston is born in Philadelphia in 1889. The journalist, playwright and two-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter wrote or co-wrote more than two dozen screenplays including Universal classics Dracula, Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, and The Mummy, as well as Mad Love, Mark of the Vampire, and Gaslight. He died in 1954.
