The Toxic Avenger opens in limited release in the U.S. in 1985. The trashy, low-budget horror comedy about a janitor who becomes a mutant superhero features lots of violence and gore, and develops an almost immediate cult following as a midnight movie in New York City. Its relative success helps transform the small film company Troma Entertainment into an indie horror powerhouse for home video. The film is followed by three sequels, a 2025 reboot, a stage musical, video game, comic book and animated TV series.
