Frankenstein Conquers the World opens across the U.S. in 1966. Director Ishiro Honda gives the Frankenstein monster the kaiju treatment. The film — about a boy resistant to radiation — opens in Japan two days after the 20th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing and is a hit. Though it’s a mild success in the U.S., the film is followed a year later by a sequel, The War of the Gargantuas.
