Addams Family characters appear for the first time in The New Yorker in 1938. Morticia and Lurch are the first of several familiar characters that would appear over four decades in that and other magazines, created by cartoonist Charles Addams. The Addams Family is one of the most successful cartoon franchises in history, with the characters later adapted into a TV series in 1964, an animated TV series in 1973, two feature films in the 1990s, another TV series in 1998, an animated film in 2019, and a Broadway musical in 2010.
