The original developer of the creation and recording technique of sound effects for motion-pictures, his work stretches from the early sound films in the 1920s to films like Spartacus in the 1960s. People who perform the craft now are called “Foley artists.” He died in 1967.

The father of the modern strobe light received his PhD in electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology when he began using the stroboscope to study synchronous motors. Edgerton also played a role in the development and use of sonar and deep-sea photography. He died in 1990.
