The first story of Tomie is published in 1987. The Japanese horror manga series is written and illustrated by Junji Ito and appears in Japan’s Monthly Halloween shojo magazine. The story of the succubus examines misogyny, gender roles and female adolescent anxieties and would run until 2000 and be republished in three volumes. It would also be adapted into a long-running live action film series and anthology TV series.
