Screamin’ Jay Hawkins is born in Cleveland in 1929. The R&B singer and songwriter is most famous for the 1956 song “I Put A Spell On You” and over the top live performances that included him coming out of a coffin in colorful outfits that were comic appropriations of voodoo. The song never charted though several cover versions did and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame chose the song as one of The 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. He died in 2000.
