The Mummy is released in 1932. Loosely based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Ring of Thoth as well as the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb a decade earlier, the film features Boris Karloff in his second classic monster role as the revived ancient mummy and Zita Johann as his reincarnated object of desire. Universal would follow it with four unrelated sequels in the 1940s.
