The legendary Black Shuck kills two people at Holy Trinity Church, Blythburgh, England in 1577. The creature, said to be a large black dog with fiery eyes, reportedly bursts through the doors, kills a man and boy, and leaves scorch marks on the door as the church steeple collapsed behind it. Though probably a lightning strike, the legend continues in East Anglia, eventually inspiring Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of The Baskervilles.
