The Queen of Spades premieres in London in 1949. Based on a short story by Russian writer Alexander Pushkin, the film is a BAFTA Best Film nominee but later thought lost. Rediscovered and re-released in 2009, it’s now highly regarded and considered by filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Wes Anderson as one of Britain’s greatest films.
