Charles Dodgson — A.K.A. Lewis Carroll — tells ten-year-old Alice Liddell and her two sisters the first version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland while paddling a boat down the Thames in Oxfordshire, England in 1862. Carroll would handwrite and draw the first version of the book for Alice in 1864 and it would be published in 1865. Carroll would later write a sequel, Through the Looking Glass, and the stories would be adapted for the stage, film and TV many times. Alice in Wonderland day is celebrated every July 4 in England.
