Author Stephen King is born in Portland, Maine in 1947. The most well-known and successful horror author of the last half century, he has written more than 250 novels, novellas, or short story collections — including Carrie, The Stand, The Dead Zone, The Shining, Misery, It, and Salem’s Lot — with nearly 70 movies, and nearly 40 TV movies, series, miniseries or episodes based on his work. More than a dozen stage versions of his work have also been presented.
